Tech Topic # 1 : Pedometers

My first topic I will be discussing is the use of pedometers in a physical education
setting. Pedometers are a fairly cheap, easy to use, and accurate way to measure physical activity levels for students.  Every field teacher that I have been placed with thus far utilizes pedometers.  They are very time efficient for putting them on and taking them off.  My field teachers also used a "step count goal" for  each class to provide extra motivation among students.  I feel as students also like the use of pedometers as they have little competitions with each other to see how can achieve more steps.  This competition is beneficial for both the students and teachers.  The pedometers also show how vigorous particular activities are.  Throughout a school year students can see firsthand what activities increase physical activity levels by looking at their pedometers.  All my experiences with pedometers have been positive and I encourage all other physical educators to to take advantage of pedometers in class!

  1. Great topic, and very useful in a PE setting. This is a great way to challenge students to move more and in doing so they feel accomplished by getting their step count to a set goal. It is also a great way for teachers to gauge participation from each student as it may be hard to monitor what each student is doing the entire class period. We use these out at field and the students love the challenge posed by the instructor. I have only had positive experiences with pedometers as well so I would implement them in my classroom.

  2. This is a relevant topic, and I think this is a great way to track steps. We used to have these in elementary school. The main problem I found is that my classmates would hit or tap the pedometer, which gave an inaccurate reading of how many steps students took. Have they improved this technology at all to prevent students from doing that?

  3. This is an awesome topic and perfect for those looking to see just how physically fit they are. These are perfect for the school setting to get kids more engaged in physical activity. It provides a small sense of competition that pushes makes kids push themselves to see what they're made of. This could also be used in adventure education in the same way. Pedometers can be used in any setting, they are the perfect tool for helping people track their fitness level and keep pushing themselves to the next level.
